Valle Tierra Mayor

Ushuaia , Tierra del Fuego

Located in the heart of Tierra del Fuego, Valle Tierra Mayor serves as a meeting point between environmental preservation and recreational development. It is a nature reserve comprising a protected area of approximately 29,500 hectares, established by provincial decree in 1994 to safeguard the biodiversity and landscape of the region’s Patagonian forests. ## Protected environment and nature The space integrates fully into the Patagonian forests ecoregion, offering an environment where landscape conservation is the central focus. As a zone designated for tourism under protection regulations, it allows visitors to observe the characteristic features of the Fuegian valleys without diminishing the scale of the original ecosystem. The reserve acts as a green lung connecting the urban periphery with the depths of the province’s forests. ## Tradition and winter activities With a history dating back to 1976, the site has been a pioneer in promoting snow sports in the area. Its story is tied to the development of cross-country skiing and the introduction of Snow Cat routes — activities that marked the beginnings of winter offerings in the Ushuaia department. Today, the valley is a reference point for regionally significant sporting events such as the Marcha Blanca, the Winter Triathlon, and the Snow Trail Running, cementing its identity as an adventure center adapted to the climatic conditions of the Fuegian winter. ## Gastronomy and regional identity Beyond physical activity, the valley offers a cultural dimension through its cuisine. The gastronomic offering centers on the flavors typical of cold-climate regions, with Fuegian lamb cooked al asador standing out in particular. This cooking method, which uses lenga logs and requires more than four hours over the fire, aims to preserve the region’s tradition. The menu is complemented by dishes such as stews, soups, fondue, and homemade pasta, alongside a café service that includes artisanal products — integrating the visitor’s experience with the local culinary heritage.
