La Montaña
La Montaña is the leading Spanish language school in Argentine Patagonia. Founded in 2002, it has spent more than two decades running immersion programs in San Carlos de Bariloche, combining language learning with the geography and culture of the Andean-Patagonian region.
The school occupies a seven-story building at Juramento 190, steps from the Centro Cívico — Bariloche’s historic and architectural heart, built in Alpine-Patagonian style in 1938 — and less than a hundred meters from the entrance to Nahuel Huapi National Park. The central location means students can reach the city’s main attractions on foot or by public transport without needing a car.
The academic program is structured across eight levels and develops all four communicative skills: reading comprehension, written expression, listening, and speaking. Core offerings include the Intensive and Super Intensive group courses, plus individual formats — two-to-one and one-to-one — a Crash Course for shorter stays, and online lessons. For professional learners, the school runs specialized tracks in medical Spanish, business Spanish, and cultural Spanish. New groups start on a rolling basis throughout the year, making it easy to join at almost any time.
One of the things that sets La Montaña apart from a conventional language academy is the integration of extracurricular activities into the weekly program. At least three times a week, the school team organizes outings and workshops: historic city walks, Patagonian cooking classes, hikes through national park trails, film screenings with guided debate, and pronunciation workshops. The aim is for Spanish practice to extend beyond the classroom into daily exchanges with local residents and classmates from other cultures.
The mix of people who come through the school is itself part of the experience. Each year students arrive from more than eighteen countries — primarily the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom — spanning a wide range of ages and backgrounds: university students on study-abroad programs, professionals on career breaks, families traveling with children, retirees, and independent travelers. That diversity turns the classes into genuine spaces of cultural exchange rather than purely formal instruction.
Bariloche amplifies the whole proposition. The city sits at 800 meters above sea level on the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, offering mountain scenery year-round: hiking and water sports in summer, skiing and snowboarding in winter. The school taps into this setting with its “Spanish and Nature” and “Spanish and Ski” add-ons, designed to structure days between morning classes and afternoon outdoor activity. A homestay with a local family, available as part of the accommodation offer, extends immersion well beyond school hours.
For international university students, La Montaña also operates as a recognized provider of academic credits under study-abroad frameworks, positioning it as a formal study destination as well as a travel experience.
