Bariloche Nordic Ski Center

In a region where alpine skiing commands most of the winter attention, the Bariloche Nordic Ski Center holds a distinctive place: it is one of the few centers in Andean Patagonia dedicated exclusively to cross-country skiing and snow-based mountain activities. Located on the lower slopes of Cerro Otto, just six kilometers from the center of San Carlos de Bariloche, it is an accessible option both for guests staying in the city and for visitors looking for something different from the runs at Cerro Catedral.

Nordic skiing — also called cross-country skiing — is a discipline that covers flat and gently rolling terrain using a self-propulsion technique more akin to ski touring than high-speed descent. At this center, the groomed and marked circuits total more than ten kilometers of trails designed to accommodate complete beginners as well as skiers with technique who want a more physically demanding session. The succession of gentle curves through coihue forest, with the cordillera as a backdrop, turns each outing into an experience that blends aerobic effort and Patagonian scenery.

For those who prefer to explore the snow without skis, the center offers snowshoe hikes that allow visitors to venture into the winter landscape of Cerro Otto with no prior experience needed. Snowshoes distribute weight across the snow surface and open access to sections of the mountain that would otherwise be difficult to travel, especially after fresh snowfall covers the Andean understory.

Snowmobiles add a more dynamic dimension to the offering: local guides lead tours across open terrain, with stretches that combine controlled speed and stops at natural viewpoints. The activity can be booked independently or as part of combination packages — skiing plus snowmobile, or snowshoeing plus snowmobile — allowing visitors to alternate between different rhythms during a single visit. There is also the option of touring the mountain aboard a Defender 4×4, the all-terrain vehicles that serve as a rolling observation platform for groups.

Biathlon, the Olympic discipline combining cross-country skiing and target shooting, also features in the center’s offering. The experience introduces visitors to the basics of the discipline in a recreational format, with no prior training required.

What sets the Nordic Ski Center apart from the rest of Bariloche’s winter offering is precisely that non-alpine orientation. At Cerro Catedral, the focus is on descending; here, movement is horizontal and each person sets their own pace according to their fitness and curiosity. That makes it a particularly valued option for families with children, travelers who do not ski conventionally, and those who want to make the most of a winter morning without committing to the full logistics of a day at an alpine ski resort.

The operating season depends on snow accumulation at Cerro Otto, whose moderate elevation relative to the major Patagonian ski centers means the busiest months are concentrated in the heart of winter. The location six kilometers from the urban center makes getting there by private vehicle the most straightforward option, though the center also arranges transport for those who need it.
