Andean Crossing

Route across Lake Nahuel Huapi, Todos los Santos, and Frías between Argentina and Chile.

bariloche , rio-negro

The Cruce Andino is an international crossing connecting the cities of San Carlos de Bariloche, in Argentina, and Puerto Varas, in Chile. The route traverses the Andes mountain range, combining navigation across three distinct lakes — Nahuel Huapi, Todos los Santos, and Frías — with overland sections through two national parks. It is a journey designed for those who prefer a slower pace, where the Valdivian rainforest landscape and the presence of volcanoes define the character of the trip.

Route dynamics and landscapes

The experience begins with a crossing of the Blest arm of Lake Nahuel Huapi. The journey departs from Puerto Pañuelo, traveling across waters that afford views of Centinela Island — a historically significant site where the remains of Perito Moreno rest — before reaching Cascada Blanca and arriving at Puerto Blest. From the dock, the route continues overland toward the Frías River, along winding trails through dense forest.

After a brief crossing of Lake Frías, the itinerary includes an overland section in 4x4 vehicles specially equipped for mountain terrain. This segment is essential for reaching the highest point of the crossing and passing through the international border into Chilean territory. Along the way, the landscape is defined by the lush vegetation of the Valdivian rainforest, with views that take in ancient forests, streams, and lagoons.

Mountain stopover and overnight stays

A distinctive feature of this crossing is the option to include a stay at intermediate points along the route. The itinerary allows for stops at Villa Peulla or Puerto Blest, locations situated in the heart of the Andes. Villa Peulla, within Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales, functions as an ecological enclave where nature is the central focus. This setting is characterized by dense vegetation, waterfalls, and a wide variety of bird species.

For those who choose to complete the crossing over two days, these stops offer the opportunity to spend the night amid Andean scenery, allowing for a deeper connection with the surroundings before completing the final leg into Chile. The presence of ancient forests and the geography of interconnected lakes sets the experience apart from conventional routes, with an emphasis on observing the biodiversity and natural history of the region.

Traveler profile

This activity suits a traveler profile seeking a gradual transition between the two countries, with an interest in lake geography and the observation of protected ecosystems. It is a journey that calls for attentiveness to the environment, best enjoyed when the focus is on contemplating the southern forests of the world and engaging with the volcanic and lake landscapes that define this stretch of the Andean frontier.
