Refugio Agostino Rocca
Located in the heart of Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, Refugio Agostino Rocca sits at 1,432 metres above sea level, specifically in the Paso de las Nubes area. Inaugurated in April 2012 through an initiative of the Club Andino Bariloche and with the support of the Organización Techtech, this establishment represents an evolution in the mountain infrastructure of the region. Unlike more traditional shelters, its construction aims to integrate a higher level of comfort within a demanding natural setting, functioning as a strategic rest point for those traversing the slopes of the imposing Cerro Tronador.
Andean surroundings and landscape
The refuge occupies a privileged position for observing the most distinctive features of the cordillera. From its location, the landscape is dominated by the Argentino and Chileno peaks of Cerro Tronador, along with views toward Cerros Constitución and Parque. The geographic setting allows visitors to take in Glaciar Frías and a water system characterised by the valley crossed by the Alerce and Frías rivers, where lakes of crystal-clear green water stand out. The biodiversity and scale of these glacial formations define the identity of the place, making it a key node for understanding glacier dynamics and the geomorphology of the area.
The route to Paso de las Nubes
Reaching the refuge requires a hike that takes place mainly between November and April. The route departs from the Pampa Linda trailhead, covering approximately 14.3 kilometres with a positive elevation gain of around 710 metres. The trail crosses varied terrain: it begins with a path that crosses the Río Castaño Overa and continues alongside the Arroyo Alerce for several hours on a gentle gradient. A distinctive section of the ascent is the stretch known as “el Caracol”, where the difficulty increases slightly due to steeper ground before reaching the flat area that leads directly to the refuge structure. The estimated walking time to complete this route is between 4 and 6 hours.
Territorial context and the mountain
Refugio Agostino Rocca acts as a fundamental connection point within the trail network linking sectors such as Puerto Blest and Glaciar Frías. Its presence at Paso de las Nubes consolidates an infrastructure that allows travellers to move along the slopes of Tronador with greater safety, offering a refuge that combines the demands of moderate-difficulty trekking with facilities designed for overnight stays and meals. As one of the more recent constructions within the Bariloche refuge system, its integration into the landscape seeks to balance a human presence with the preservation of the high-mountain ecosystems of the national park.
