Circuito Chico

Llao Llao , Rio Negro

Circuito Chico is the most emblematic route in Bariloche, a paved road of approximately 65 kilometres that runs along the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi. This stretch is not merely a transit road but a fundamental axis for understanding the geography of the region: it crosses diverse Andean forest ecosystems and connects key points between the city centre and the furthest reaches of the Llao Llao Peninsula. Its layout makes it possible to observe the transition between the lake’s waters and the mountainous relief characteristic of Patagonia.

Landscapes and geography of the route

The route begins along Avenida Bustillo, where the landscape is defined by the shoreline and landmarks such as the Península de San Pedro and Puerto Bueno. As the road advances towards kilometre 20, the topography begins to change, incorporating natural viewpoints that offer a broad view of the lake surroundings. One of the most notable landmarks is Cerro Campanario, an elevated point that provides a panoramic perspective of the area, making it possible to distinguish the extent of the lakes and the surrounding peaks.

Further along, the route enters zones of denser forest. At kilometre 23 it reaches Villa Llao Llao, a sector where historic architecture merges with the natural setting. Here stand significant elements such as the Hotel Llao Llao and the Capilla San Eduardo, a structure whose aesthetic seeks to integrate with the surrounding forest. The presence of this urban-natural nucleus is essential for understanding the scale of the territory and how the buildings in the area have respected the physical features of the landscape.

Connection with the lake and forest environment

The circuit continues towards the Llao Llao Peninsula, where the road branches to allow access to more isolated areas such as Villa Tacul, situated on Bahía Llao Llao. This sector reveals a quieter side of the route, with trails that venture into the forest and connect with the waters of the bay. The route also allows visitors to approach Lago Escondido, maintaining constant contact with the local biodiversity.

Crossing the bridge over the Arroyo Angostura, the itinerary offers a detour towards the Bahía López area. This sector is characterised by more imposing geology, where the rocky escarpments of Cerro López and Cerro Capilla dominate the view. The presence of these rocky massifs alongside the waters of Lago Moreno completes a mosaic of natural elements that define the identity of this part of Bariloche, consolidating Circuito Chico as the centrepiece of landscape observation in the region.
