Cerro de la Virgen

Villa General Belgrano , Cordoba

Situated along the Sierras Chicas range, Cerro de la Virgen is one of the most recognizable features of the landscape surrounding Villa General Belgrano. This peak functions not only as a natural lookout point but also marks a transition between the alpine-style architecture of the town and the rugged geography of the Córdoba region. Its significance lies in the elevated perspective it offers over the Valle de Calamuchita, allowing visitors to observe the layout of the territory and the integration of urban areas with the hill environment.

The ascent along the Sierras Chicas trails

The route to the summit follows a trail that begins at the base of the hill, located near Ruta Provincial 5. The trek involves an ascent through terrain composed of rock, scrub, and grass, with stretches where moisture can alter the surface conditions. The uphill section covers approximately 1,372 metres, requiring moderate physical effort due to slopes that can reach 30 degrees.

The ascent takes an estimated 45 to 50 minutes, depending on each walker’s pace. The terrain presents medium difficulty, characterised by the uneven surface typical of hill country, which makes progress deliberate. As a trail with only partial signage, the route demands attention to stay oriented toward the summit.

The summit and the Calamuchita horizon

At 980 metres above sea level, the landscape opens up. The summit is marked by a metal structure bearing a cross, which serves as a visual reference point for the region. From here, the elevation affords a clear view of Villa General Belgrano and the full extent of the Valle de Calamuchita, offering a contrast between the density of the town and the breadth of the surrounding sierras.

This natural lookout is the conclusion of a total route that, including the descent, covers 2,744 metres. The experience at the summit centres on observing the local relief, where the topography of the Sierras Chicas becomes fully apparent. It is a place where the scale of the landscape conveys the magnitude of the natural environment that defines this part of Córdoba.
