Amonite Apart & Spa
San Martín de los Andes holds a particular place on the Patagonian map: a lakeside city nestled between Lanín National Park and Lake Lácar, it balances the human scale of a mountain town with well-developed tourism infrastructure. Amonite Apart & Spa sits in that setting to offer something beyond standard accommodation — a space where contemporary architecture, artisan design, and physical wellbeing converge in a single project.
The name is not arbitrary. Ammonites are fossilized mollusks from the Cretaceous period — more than 60 million years ago, this corner of Patagonia lay beneath the sea. Those fossils are embedded in the complex’s dry-stone walls (pircas) and in decorative objects throughout the common areas, making local geological history part of the property’s visual language. It’s a gesture that connects the place to its territory in a way that’s unusual for an urban accommodation.
Construction involved artisans, professionals, artists, and designers working in coordination to shape a building of contemporary architecture notable for the quality of its finishes. That higher standard extends to material choices: non-native plantation timber was used throughout to avoid impacting the region’s native flora, and the complex incorporates solar panels for thermal energy generation, covering a significant portion of its hot water and heating demand. The operator notes that Amonite was the first urban apart-hotel in the country to adopt this technology.
At the heart of the property is its spa area. The heated pool with hydromassage operates year-round, regardless of season; dry sauna and Finnish sauna complete the relaxation offer; and an on-site massage room means treatments are available without leaving the hotel. This service mix lets guests alternate between the outdoor activities that define San Martín — skiing at Chapelco in winter, trekking, kayaking, and mountain biking in summer — and on-site recovery time.
Units range from one-bedroom apartments (40 m², up to 2 guests) and the Suite Amonite (55 m², 2 guests) to two-bedroom layouts — 55 m² for 3 guests or 70 m² for 4 — up to three-bedroom apartments (90 m², up to 6 guests). All are fully equipped for both short weekend stays and extended weeks. The complex includes breakfast service, housekeeping, covered quincho areas for guests, a wine cellar, WiFi throughout, and on-site parking.
The apart also caters to remote workers: the website includes a dedicated digital nomads section, suggesting robust connectivity and spaces designed for guests who need to balance work with rest. It also identifies as bike-friendly, a natural fit for a city where cycling is a common way to navigate the waterfront and town center.
Located at Brown 385, corner of Rodhe, Amonite sits in the center of San Martín de los Andes, a short walk from the main commercial streets and local restaurants, and close to access points to Lake Lácar.
