Museo Piedra Cruz Sur
Established in the heart of Mina Clavero, the Museo Piedra Cruz Sur stands as the oldest cultural and scientific institution in the town. Founded on January 15, 1985 by Carmen Marín de Dreier, it grew out of a deep personal fascination with the mineral kingdom, transforming a private collection into a public legacy now managed by the Dreier family. Its name pays tribute to the «Piedra Cruz», a variety of andalusite characteristic of the region that displays a natural cross in its cross-section — for the founder, a symbol of the union between the earth and the sacred.
The museum’s collection is remarkable both for its size and its geographic diversity, housing more than 2,000 pieces from all five continents. Visitors can browse display cases ranging from delicate amethysts and regional quartz specimens to exotic examples of malachite and lapis lazuli. Among the most singular pieces are geodes with water sealed inside — small capsules of geological time preserving moisture from millions of years ago — along with stones that float and petrified ferns that speak to the planet’s botanical history. The paleontology section rounds out the tour with fossils that shed light on the evolution of life in the Traslasierra region and beyond.
What truly sets this museum apart from other mineralogy collections is its metaphysical and spiritual approach. For Carmen Marín, minerals were not mere objects of geological study but carriers of energy and messages for the human spirit. This vision takes shape in the «Salón Lucero del Alba», a space for reflection where metaphysical drawings made by the founder herself are on display. These artistic works, inspired by the geometry and vibration of stones, invite visitors on an introspective journey, stepping back from technical analysis to connect with the intrinsic beauty of nature.
The tour extends outdoors, where a mineral garden offers a more tactile and open-air experience. Here stands the «Árbol de los Deseos» (or Árbol del Amor — the Wishing Tree, or Love Tree), an installation surrounded by stones where visitors often leave their intentions, reinforcing the mystical character that permeates the entire establishment. For decades the museum has maintained a strong educational focus, designing spaces where children can interact with minerals through kaleidoscopes and magnifying glasses, nurturing curiosity about earth sciences from an early age.
Located on Avenida Mitre, the Museo Piedra Cruz Sur has now passed the forty-year mark, cementing its place as an essential stop on Córdoba’s tourism circuit. More than a static exhibition, it presents itself as an interpretation center where geology meets art and philosophy, reminding us that every stone beneath our feet tells a story that transcends the scale of human time.
