Costa Y Pampa
Located in the heart of Chapadmalal, about 30 minutes from central Mar del Plata, Costa y Pampa represents a singular winemaking venture on the Buenos Aires coast. The project, part of Bodega Trapiche, sits on the grounds of the historic Estancia Santa Isabel, a property whose significance dates to the late nineteenth century. What defines this space is not only its roots in the region’s ranching and agricultural tradition, but its ability to weave viticulture into a coastal setting where the South Atlantic is the undisputed protagonist.
The character of the Atlantic terroir
The identity of the wines produced here depends directly on a particular geography. Unlike mountain regions, where wide temperature swings and dry climates prevail, this stretch of coast is shaped by gentle rolling hills and fields that slope toward the sea. The proximity to the ocean — just 6 kilometres away — brings a constant oceanic influence. Rainfall is heavy, and the predominantly cold and humid climate, combined with a narrower thermal range, governs how the vines develop.
This particular microclimate allows for the production of varieties that retain a distinctive freshness. The results are delicate wines with an aromatic complexity that reflects the ambient humidity and the subtle salinity of the coastal surroundings. The production aims to capture the essence of the Buenos Aires plains where they meet the Atlantic, yielding wines of considerable body yet with the elegance characteristic of temperate-climate regions.
The winery tour and its surroundings
The experience at Costa y Pampa unfolds among the vineyards and the estate’s facilities. The tour offers a view of how viticulture adapts to the hills of Chapadmalal, integrating into a landscape of grasslands and open fields that define the area. Guided visits provide an introduction to the winemaking process, showing how the Atlantic climate shapes each stage of the vine’s cycle.
The space is designed to offer a food offering that complements the tasting of its wines and sparkling wines. The menu includes pairings with cheese and charcuterie boards, crafted to highlight the house’s fresh notes. The grounds of Estancia Santa Isabel also allow visitors to combine the winery visit with other recreational activities typical of the countryside, rounding out a proposition that goes beyond simple tasting and focuses on enjoyment of the Buenos Aires landscape.
A reference point in the region
Costa y Pampa functions as a reference node for the development of wine tourism in and around Mar del Plata. By occupying an already well-established historic structure, the winery adds a new cultural layer to the territory, transforming a landscape traditionally associated with ranching into a destination for wine appreciation. The integration of the vineyards with the estate’s activities creates an ecosystem where historic heritage and agricultural innovation coexist, offering a different perspective on what the Atlantic coast can produce.
